Douglas County Smoke-Free for Three Years
Residents Asked to Please Report Violations
Smoke-free is now a way of life in Douglas County and Nebraska, where it has been three years since most indoor public smoking has been prohibited.
The Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act became law on June 1, 2009. The law’s purpose is to protect the public health and welfare by eliminating smoking in indoor public places and places of employment statewide with a few exemptions, such as cigar bars and tobacco-only retailers.
“Since the law went into effect in 2009, the Douglas County Health Department has fielded 52 complaints,” said Chrissy Stewart, Air Pollution Technician, with the Douglas County Health Department. “While most people are complying with the law, we encourage Douglas County residents who witness a smoking violation to contact the Department.”
Violations can be reported by calling the Douglas County Health Department at (402) 444-7496 OR by using the on-line complaint form at: http://www.douglascountyhealth.com/healthy-living/prevention-programs/tobacco-prevention.
